Lauren Hope Walker: Birthday Card

In Birthday Card, Lauren Hope Walker utilizes Blind Alley’s interior space as a stage, with the

works in the installation acting as props to set the scene. Embracing an amateur prop-making

aesthetic and utilizing affordable materials, Walker creates a playful installation that manifests

as pink, glittery clouds, twirling checkered droplets, and the beginnings of a housefire emerging

from a windowpane.

Describing Blind Alley Projects as a “unique space with a sense of wonder,” Walker says that

“peering into that large glass window often leaves me longing to get closer to what's inside, with

my own reflection sometimes blocking the view of the artwork. I think the beauty of this space

lies in how it provides just enough of what you need to see on the interior, while also reminding

you of your own presence with the work.” With this in mind, Walker wanted to “play with that

push and pull and craft a scene that urges viewers to engage with the interior space by way of

their own reflection,” adding, “they have the opportunity to activate the scene and step into the

role as the main character — the show must go on!”

Artist Bio

Lauren Hope Walker is an artist currently living in Houston, Texas. She works across mediums of

painting, sculpture and ceramics to investigate her queer femme identity through imagined, absurd

narratives. Walker received her MFA in painting from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas in

2024 after receiving her BFA in painting from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas

in 2021. Walker has participated in multiple shows across the DFW metroplex with her most recent

exhibition being at Moudy North Gallery and Easyside in Fort Worth, Texas.
